1000 Books Before Kindergarten

You may have noticed the Solar System on the walls of the Children’s Room. What is it for you ask? It’s our new 1000 Books before Kindergarten chart! Let your kids climb aboard a rocket ship with their name on it and watch them shoot through space all the way to Pluto!

For all kids from birth up through entering kindergarten.
The single most important thing you can do to prepare your children to read is to read to them every day. Research proves that children need to hear 1000 books before they begin to learn to read independently.

Reading to children will: increase their vocabulary, increase their listening and narrative skills, help to instill in them self-awareness and confidence, impart an understanding of their place in the world.

Registration is required. Email: librarian@smythpl.org.
After your child has read their first 100 books, one of the rewards and incentives for this program is a 100 Books Before Kindergarten tote bag!

Download, print, and fill out these documents: Book Log and Children’s Book Log; then bring them to the library once 100 books have been read!
